Dusty Attic July Sketch Challenge

Each month we have a fantastic Dusty Attic sketch challenge and the winner gets a great chipboard package prize - link your layout entry on the right side of the DA blog!

This month I decided to pull out some old papers from my stash (G45 and Basic Grey) to complement the lovely sketch. These floral papers were perfect to be embellished with the newest birds on a branch, mini gates and hashtag saying chipboard pieces.

Let's start with the beautiful sketch - so inspirational!

I cut the chipboard branch in two and placed the pieces at the top of my page. The branch was finished using Dusty Attic paints (alabaster, forrest, pesto, crushed olive, soot,  hot chocolate). The birds were primed with gesso, inked with pink for the bellies and finished with snow-tex.

The gates were simply randomly splattered with gesso - that's it! The title was primed with gesso and topped with snow-tex. I also added a few Dusty Attic celestial white blooms and some smaller Petaloo flowers (around gates and in the branch).

Thanks for joining today and don't forget to link your interpretation of the monthly sketch on the right side of the Dusty Attic Blog!

C'est Magnifique July Sketch

I'm back today to share a summer display layout for my mantle. I made it using the fantastic July kit and the gorgeous kit sketch by C'est Magnifique. Everything on this layout (except the vintage ladies) is from the main kit and the flower add-on. So many gorgeous flowers (as usual) this month and the new Blue Fern papers are out of this world - so pretty. Deonna really put together a stellar kit for her first one as the new owner of the kit club.

5 July kit designs - C'est Magnifique

Here are a few designs I made with the STUNNING July kit from C'est Magnifique. This is the first kit release with the new CM owner. Deonna has really put together a glorious July kit (featuring the fantastic brand new Blue Fern papers). Each month I receive the main kit and the flower add-on and these kits are so packed that I can easily create 5-7 projects!

My first layout features my favourite papers from the kit as well a a mixture of the gorgeous flowers in the main kit and from the flower add-on. I added a few doilies from my stash to soften around the photo but otherwise, all of the beautiful elements are in the kit. Gotta LOVE the pretty die cuts and crochet buttons!

Next is a layout using the fabulous teal and purple in the kit. I made the doily circle with plain cardstock and my MS circle punch (fantastic tool!). The details in these papers are so beautiful and make creating so easy!

There is such a great variety of fun embellishments and colours in the main kit to play with so I decided to make a few cards. On this first one I added a little heart doily from my stash.

My second card features more of the pretty die cut stickers and pretty papers.

For my third card, I decided to have some fun and make a double pinwheel. The embellishments in this kit are so fantastic for any type of project!

Here is a peek at the July main kit...

I just can't live without the monthly flower add-on!

STAY TUNED - I will be back tomorrow with one more project inspired by the kit sketch.

Dusty Attic Journal

I created an altered Dusty Attic journal this month. The Dusty journal was already a beautiful deep rose colour so I just enhanced it by adding some pearl texture paste in a script stencil as well as sponging gesso through a damask stencil. Next, I sprayed the entire surface with 2 pink and red mists. The mists nicely pooled around the script giving it a great shadow effect.

I then primed my chipboard accents with gesso and sprayed them with white pearl mist -- brand new ornate crosses (cut the ends to create top left hinges), a divine diva, an elegant flourish and a mini word were used. Some of the pieces were then slightly inked with light pink. The diva bodice and mini word were simply given a generous coat of diamond dust for extra texture and sparkle.

Elegant flourish small - DA0878
Ornate Crosses - DA1083

Something Tattered and ClearSnap Cross

Welcome to day 2 of the Clearsnap and Something Tattered cross-promotion!

From June 20 to the 22nd, we are showcasing projects created by both of our Design Teams. ClearSnap was so generous in providing each Something Tattered designer with gorgeous inks to works with for this cross promotion. I chose to use the brand new Splash and Concord chalk inks as well as a touch of silver pigment ink for my project.

We were given a wedding theme so I created a little gift box to hold a piece of jewelry for the Maid of Honour to wear on the big day. I created the background using 2 brand new Clearsnap chalk ink colours, then stamped with gesso and pigment ink on top.

Here's a little about Clearsnap®:

Finding new ways to help our customers add color to craft projects is our passion. From our beginnings in a garage workshop more than 20 years ago, we've grown into a leading US manufacturer in the paper crafts industry.

In 1986, Clearsnap®developed the Rollagraph® roller stamp system, beginning a legacy of innovation. Rollagraph® introduced the world to the self-inking rolling rubber stamp with interchangeable ink cartridges and stamp wheels.

With the ColorBox® line of inkpads, Clearsnap® introduced many features common on today's inkpads, such as the raised inking surface which allows the use of any size inkpad with any size stamp. Cat's Eye® inkpads brought high quality inks to the market at an affordable price. Petal Point® and Paintbox® inkpads offer removable plates or petals in a multi-color palette.

Clearsnap® uses only the finest quality materials in our products. When we develop a new inkpad, applicator or embellishment, we put it through its paces. We invite some of the best, most experienced and demanding artists to test it for us. Products that survive and shine through this process make it into our catalog and onto our web site.

And here's a little about Something Tattered:

When Beth began hunting wallpaper for the bandboxes she was creating in 1990 it started a life of antiquing adventures and a passion for old paper. In 1993 Beth’s wallpaper covered boxes we featured in Victoria magazine and Beth’s sister Marilyn Krehbiel joined her in the pursuit. Marilyn’s business Hannah’s Treasures evolved into purveying historic wallpapers for movie sets. Beth peddled her boxes to the coast of California and settled in the west. In 1997 Beth married Peter Neumann, son of a letterpress printer, who shared Beth’s appreciation for the old paper arts. In 2011 Peter and Beth began Something Tattered in response to Beth’s newest pursuit, Wedding Paper designs from her vast collection of antique paper. In 2013 Something Tattered launched the current line of craft stamps and in 2014 the new antique wallpaper stamps were added bringing the adventure full circle. We hope you will share the passion.

From June 20 to the 22nd, we are showcasing projects created by both of our Design Teams.

We are so glad you took the time to visit as our Designers have some beautiful and inspiring projects to share with you today. We were challenged to create Wedding themed projects without using patterned paper. The designs you see were created exclusively with Clearsnap inks and Something Tattered stamps!

Dusty Attic sketch with Something Tattered

I decided to do something a little dramatic - black, taupe and coral... but then I softened it all up with distressing, mists and masking. Not my usual to use paint and goop on a layout - messy but a fun effect. This is a picture taken the day we brought our daughter home from the hospital.

Here is a peek at the background I created with gesso, Something Tattered Stamps (Swirls Set and French Script Poem), coral mist and of course some gorgeous Dusty Attic chipboard. I used many leftovers from my June C'est Magnifique kit (paper, mist, ribbon roses and doily die cuts) for this layout.

Here is a close-up of the lace border chipboard that I splattered with Dusty Attic Black Soot paint and then sprayed with a coral mist (it soaks into the bare parts of the chipboard). I even soaked up the leftover mist from all the chipboard (border, butterfly and title) with the ribbon roses - they used to be light pink.

I also used the gorgeous JUNE Dusty Attic sketch as inspiration.
Be sure to enter and link to your interpretation on the Dusty Attic Blog for a chance to win some amazing chipboard!

Tie-dye crackle chipboard TUTORIAL (Dusty Attic/ Something Tattered)

I have been holding onto several chipboard casings of Dusty Attic mini words and titles. I thought they would made great pieces to experiment techniques on. Well, I liked the result of what I call "Tie-Dye Crackle Chipboard" and decided to put it to good use. I started off by stamping the bag using the Something Tattered SWIRLS stamp set and some white acrylic paint. I also used the same stamp set with distress ink on the doily.

click on images for larger views

Tie-dye crackle chipboard instructions:

STEP 1 - Using a stiff paintbrush, stipple (pouncing motion) a thick layer of white gesso on your chipboard to create "peaks" and then let it completely dry.

STEP 2 - At close range, spray a variety of mists, letting it pool in areas.

STEP 3 - Apply clear crackle varnish in a gentle circular motion - it will reactivate the mist to create a tie dye effect.

STEP 4 - Watch the magic happen... as the crackle varnish dries it pulls the mist away from the gesso "peaks". This exposes the white gesso beneath in the cracks of the varnish.

For a more subtle effect, use two soft mist colours and apply clear gloss varnish (instead of crackle) - as I have done on this mini card.

Dusty Attic products used:
Mini Words # 1 (DA0386)
Happy Memories (DA0732)
Celestial White Flowers (DA0800)
Clear Crackle Varnish (DA0900)
Clear Gloss Varnish (DA0901)

C'est Magnifique JUNE kit Reveal!

I have tons of projects to reveal today, using the gorgeous June "Lazy Days of Summer" kit from C'est Magnifique Kits. What a variety of gorgeous colours and embellishments to play with!

Up first is my oldest son when he was a toddler and I was VERY pregnant with my daughter. I used many beautiful elements from the main kit and flower add-on for this layout. I truly adore the flowers this month!
click on images for larger views

I made this page for my parents - this is one of my baby photos. Everything on this layout is from the main kit and flower add-on with exception of the doily (from my stash). Pink is my favourite colour so it was fitting for this layout and the white die cuts are gorgeous!

I just love this candid picture of my younger son when he was only 4 years old. The ramps are MUCH bigger now (he really scares me sometimes). Everything on this layout is from the main kit contents. Gotta love a paper with a printed doily!

This is a sweet photo taken on my daughter's first Easter. Once again, all of the elements are from the main kit and the flower add-on - even the pretty little doilies! Oh and I adore the pink ribbon roses too.

I used my scraps and some elements from the main kit (including a Shimmerz mist) to create this hazy card. I mounted everything on some cardstock from my stash.

Lastly, I made a simple folded "any occasion" card. This purse card stands up well and would be great to hold a gift card inside.
